Welcome! to Tagore Government Arts & Science College, Puducherry
The Department of Tamil was the first department to be established in Tagore Government Arts and Science College in the year 1961. Since then, thousands of students have graduated future ahead of them. Many of them are responsible citizens of the society contributing to the nation by working in an array of professional work fields like media, education department, police force, and so on. The past and present staff members of the department were indeed once students themselves of this department, which represents its quality and the impact it projects on its student’s lives.
National and linguistic patriotism are considered two of the most important pillars that aids in societal development. The ancient language of India, Tamil, with its rich heritage and history plays major role in imparting values and discipline in a student’s life. This is attained through taking students on annual visits to places in and around Pondicherry that hold historical heritage and significance.
In addition to this, the department has an exquisite collection of books on Tamil literature and grammar that helps students enhance their learning experience. To balance curricular and co-curricular activities, we encourage students to gain a practical perspective to the language by attending/ participating in various programs, conferences, workshops, and other events organized in the department.
In addition to learning about the ancient literature and the esteemed history of the Tamil language, we also prepare the students to face the ever changing trends and developments. This is done successfully by providing them with lessons in computer applications and mastering the language with a technological perspective.
Apart from this, we also induce the student’s interest in art, dance and acting by introducing elective papers in the syllabus that details on dramatics and theatrics. The department also offers elective papers on mass communication as these media have become the essential thread of the societal fabric.
Gaining knowledge and expertise about these media of mass communication like radio, television, magazine, cinema and Internet have helped many students to impart their language in various fields of profession. The department has created and aimed to create effective and efficient students who exhibit social awareness and become responsible citizens of the nation.
